Walks and Hikes

Walking as an exercise is often underestimated. However it has been proven to help you reach and maintain a healthy weight as well as preventing or managing various health conditions, including; heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. It strengthens your bones and muscles, improves your mood and lowers stress, gives you more energy and stamina, sharpens mental focus and memory and improves balance and coordination. It also has a role to play in preventing or managing cancer. What’s not to love?

Nordic walking was invented by the Finnish Olympic Skiing team as a way of staying fit in the summer months. The fitness and health benefits of Nordic Walking are significantly greater than regular walking, trekking or even jogging. Scientific research proves that Nordic Walking:

  • Activates 90% of the body's muscles

  • Burns up to 46% more calories than regular walking

  • Increases aerobic effect by up to 25% compared to regular walking

  • Decreases load and strain on the lower body

  • Tones upper arms, shoulders and back muscles

  • Improves lateral mobility of the spine

  • Develops core stability and strength

  • Promotes an upright posture

These benefits are achieved through the use of specially designed poles and a properly learned and performed Nordic Walking technique, whereby the poles are used as a resistance tool to engage the upper body. The result is a low impact, high results, total body exercise.

For guests who want to learn Nordic Walking we are happy to offer a lesson in the technique. This is a 10 step process which does require some mental attention and guests are often surprised, given that we all learn to ‘walk’ as toddlers, it’s not as straightforward as one might think. However, once grasped, the rewards are worth it as it is a complete workout.

We also provide the poles fitted for you so that you may discover the great outdoors and reconnect with nature. The really quiet roads with virtually no traffic and the local footpaths make for great walking and hiking, and for guests who arrive by car there is the stunning Cornish coast which offers mile upon mile of spectacular views.

Training is with a qualified and insured Nordic Walking and Outdoor Exercise Instructor.
