Today, 22nd April is Earth Day.
It is described as "the largest secular holiday in the world" with at least 192 countries taking part to demonstrate support for environmental protection. There are festivals, rallies, parades and it has its own flag and anthem. This year, more than one billion people are expected to celebrate Earth Day.
Earth Day has been in existence for nearly five decades. It was started in America following a devastating oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Since then it has grown to the major event it is now supported by Hollywood stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Emma Watson.
Earth Day aims to encourage people across the world to be more environmentally friendly. This might mean increasing the amount they recycle, volunteering for a local green project or installing solar panels in their home. Other eco lifestyle choices are sourcing locally grown food, growing your own, composting, using eco-friendly products in your home from your bathroom and kitchen to beauty and home improvement, saving water and electricity. Why not make a promise to go paperless, stop drinking water out of plastic bottles and to cycle or walk where possible rather than drive?
Since the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) announced that 18% of global emissions result from livestock, people have talked about the climate benefits of reducing meat consumption.
More recent studies show that food system emissions could account for as much as quarter of all human emissions. That is 12% from agricultural production, another 9% from farming induced deforestation, and a further 3% from things like refrigeration and freight.
Water, along with electricity, is another scarce resource Farmed animals eat 70 percent of the grains and cereals grown in the United States and those grains have to be watered to grow. It takes 100 calories of grain to produce three calories worth of beef. And it requires 1,799 gallons of water to produce one pound of meat.
At The Raw Retreat our food is organic, plant based, mostly raw and sourced locally where possible. We grow much of it ourselves, our products are environmentally friendly from paint to cleaning products. We only use glass for bottled water and we compost and recycle as much as we can.
